hi i'm harry: origins, purpose and intention

Nice to meet you. currently, I'm working as a junior doctor here in Melbourne, Australia. I thought, why not start making videos to show what life as a doctor is really like? Medical school, hospital shifts, figuring out my career path – there’s a lot to talk about, so I figured I’d just jump in and share it.

Why I Wanted to Start Sharing My Journey

Honestly, going through med school and now working as a third-year doctor (or PGY3 – postgraduate year year, fancy term for “third year out of med school”) made me realise something: there’s not a lot out there showing what it’s like to be a doctor in Australia. There are a ton of medical videos out there, but nothing that really hit home for me. I never really saw people in my shoes talking about what this life actually feels like. So, I decided to start making those videos myself – hopefully giving people a real look into what being a doctor is like.

From Med School to the Hospital: Reality Check

Med school starts off pretty chill. The first year is mostly theory, so you’re in lectures and tutorials – basically still in “student mode.” You feel like you’ve got this because it’s academic, and you’re used to that. But then… you get into the hospital, and everything changes. All that textbook stuff suddenly has to apply to real people with real issues, and it’s a whole new game. I was always good at exams, but interacting with patients? That’s a whole different skill set and a bit of a wake-up call, honestly.

In my second year of med school, I started doing hospital rotations, which was my first taste of real, hands-on medicine. My first rotation was Orthopedics. I’d go on ward rounds, shadow doctors, hang out in surgeries, and get some practice with patient skills. It was nerve-wracking but exciting too – finally getting into the clinical side of things after all the theory.

Figuring Out My Path in Medicine

Deciding what I wanted to specialise in was… a process. I mostly figured it out by ruling out what wasn’t for me. At first, I thought anaesthetics might be my thing, but over time, I realised I needed more of the energy and fast pace that comes with surgery. It was actually in my final intern rotation, a surgical one in Urology, that I finally felt like I’d found my place. The pace, the teamwork, the OR – it just clicked for me, and I thought, “Yeah, this is what I want to do.”

What This Is All About

Even though I’m leaning toward surgery, I want this channel to be about more than just one specialty. Life as a junior doctor in Australia is a mix of so many different experiences, and I want to share all of it – the good, the bad, the moments where you’re just trying to figure things out. After years in med school and nearly 3 years working as a doctor, I’ve picked up a lot that I think is worth putting out there for anyone curious about what this life is really like.

So yeah, if sharing this stuff helps even one or two of you feel a bit more prepared, that’d be awesome. And if not, hey, at least I get to talk about what’s been a pretty wild ride so far. Here’s to keeping it real, one video at a time.
